Darren has a background that blends hands-on grain farm ownership with professional experience in agricultural policy and business development. Following the completion of a Master's in Agricultural Economics from the University of Alberta, he spent five years managing and operating a portion of his Edmonton area family grain farm. While farming, he simultaneously undertook roles in his home county collaborating with landowners, developing agricultural policy, and assessing regional economic opportunities.

Matthew Murphy, with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural/Food Business Management from the University of Alberta, brings a strong agricultural background to our team. He spent seven years managing his family's cattle farm in east central Alberta, gaining hands-on experience in livestock and farm management.
Prior to joining us, Matthew worked for over two years on government policy matters, specializing in Meat Hygiene and Animal Health. He also served as part of an avian influenza response project during the 2022 outbreak.
Currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of British Columbia in the Lower Mainland of BC, Matthew is committed to advancing his knowledge and skills to contribute more to the agricultural and food business sectors.

Josh’s background is diverse, having developed expertise in animal health, biosecurity, waste management, renewable energy, and the agri-food industry. His passions involve the environmental microbiology and process engineering field, with experience leading the operations and development of large-scale agricultural and municipal anaerobic digestion (AD) plants using agricultural residues, food waste and municipal Source Separated Organics as feedstocks for sustainable biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) production.
Another of Josh’s passions is in the animal health and emergency management aspect of the Canadian livestock sector, with his specific involvement in Foreign Animal Disease control including working with projects relating to Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever. This includes the One Health aspects relating to animal mortality carcass management.
Before working in the municipal waste and biogas sector, Josh was involved in the Water and Wastewater sector, in the role of Project Manager, Josh helped a variety of Municipal, First Nations and agricultural businesses design, implement and operate ozone-based technologies in place of traditional disinfection practices. Josh has worked with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs monitoring and tracing the prevalence of antimicrobial residues sourced from Ontario provincially licensed abattoirs. With further industry experience working for large-scale Agri-food businesses such as Richardson Oilseed and Redpath Sugar Ltd in Food Safety Advisory roles.
Josh holds an Honours bachelor’s degree in microbiology with a Minor in Molecular Biology and Genetics, along with his Master of Science Degree in Environmental Sciences, in which he published several journal articles on the “Ambient alkaline hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion as a mortality management strategy for whole poultry carcasses.”
Josh uses his unique combination of practical agri-food, environmental experience, and strong quantitative assessment skills to solve problems in the areas of food, sustainable waste management, energy, and agriculture sectors.

Todd grew up on a mixed irrigated crop farm in southern Alberta where he has actively been involved with business operations. He also has experience operating and managing a custom farming operation. Todd’s education in agricultural business management and previous work experience have provided him with strong economic and analytic skills.

Ryan grew up on a grain farm in southwest Saskatchewan which has provided him with firsthand experience in primary agricultural operations. Ryan holds a BSc. in Agribusiness from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Food and Resource Economics from the University of British Columbia. Before joining Serecon, Ryan worked in agricultural finance and technology fields, including an internship at Farm Credit Canada. His prior experience and academic knowledge enable him to provide a variety of expertise and perspective in Canadian agriculture. Ryan primarily concentrates on performing cost of production studies and other research in Canada’s livestock sectors.

Jim’s background is in management consulting, business development and marketing. He has extensive experience in strategy development, business planning and general management. This broad skill set enables him to contribute to client engagements across all of Serecon’s practice areas. In addition, Jim is responsible for the farm asset management practice, focusing primarily on land and farming operations for non-farming landowners.

Lisa grew up on a mixed farm south of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and has an educational background in international economics. Her work includes agricultural property appraisals and consulting, data management and design, and geographic analysis. Lisa is a certified AACI appraiser and has experience with a broad range of rural valuations projects such as farm, rural, and agribusiness property appraisals, land claims valuations, and expropriation and surface rights work. She's also worked on numerous projects requiring remote sensing data or detailed mapping work and she's a member of the Alberta Geomatics Group (AGG). Lisa has a diploma in Real Estate Appraisal and Assessment from Lakeland College; Certificates in Real Property Assessment and Valuation from the University of British Columbia; a Certificate in GIS Technology from NAIT; and a Bachelor of Commerce from Grant MacEwan.

David has over 10 years of experience providing agricultural property appraisal and consulting services. He's completed many appraisal assignments for a variety of purposes, including: mortgage; estate; conservation easements; expropriation; and native land claims. Dave has been involved with numerous appraisal and consulting engagements that have been accepted as expert reports before various tribunals and court litigation. He is a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) and a certified AACI Appraiser.

Jade’s background is in administration and customer service, and she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Descended from agricultural families in western Canada, she has developed a fascination with cropping and livestock operations and enjoys applying her analytical skills to client engagements. Her performing experience and perspective as an artist provide her with strong communication and problem-solving skills that enable her to support the management consulting and appraisal teams at Serecon.
An original member of Serecon, Cheryl manages the day to day operations of the office, and is responsible for financial reporting, A/R, A/P, and payroll. Cheryl obtained a Certificate of Business Management, with Honors, through Grant MacEwan College.

Diane has over 35 years experience in administrative services. She works with our Valuation & Appraisal, Management Consulting, and Farm Asset Management specialists in completing professional reports for our clients. Diane ensures that our reports are professionally presented in a consistent format that our clients have come to know. Her administrative expertise allows our specialist to concentrate on producing value added results to our clients.

Brad was raised on an irrigated farmland, dairy farm, and cattle feedlot operation in Lethbridge County, Alberta. He attended the University of Lethbridge where he earned a Bachelor of Management Degree in Finance which was awarded with great distinction. He earned an Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (AACI, P.App.) designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada as well as an Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) designation from the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.
Brad’s professional practice is founded on providing objective opinions throughout rural western Canada in regard to land claims; compensation, damages, and injurious affection matters; loss of use analyses; asset valuations including current and retrospective appraisals of all types of rural and agricultural real property assets and operations; as well as easement and development restriction assessments among others. He has provided expert testimony before the Specific Claims Tribunal Canada, the Alberta Surface Rights Board, and the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench. Brad has completed projects throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and internationally.
Clients include numerous organizations and individuals in the public and private sectors including landowners, farmers, financial institutions, law firms, oil & gas companies, utility companies, investment funds, First Nations, and government. Brad works with each client to provide their specific valuation needs such as financial, tax purposes, expropriation, surface rights, conservation easements, native land claims or loss of use studies, litigation & expert witness, dispute resolution, and accounting requirements.

Harvey grew up on and worked extensively on a beef cattle ranch in southern British Columbia. He has a Master’s in Agricultural Economics from Germany and a wealth of valuable experience working in various roles from Canada’s diplomatic mission to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, and the Office of Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. He has considerable experience working within government agencies and has strong understanding of economics and policy, while at the same time bringing an expert ability to use both quantitative and qualitative information in assessing the impact of critical factors on the value of agribusiness. He has completed contracts for a large variety of clients at Serecon – public sector, private businesses, and agricultural industry organizations.

Courtney Knude has over 20 years of experience in the appraisal of rural property. Courtney has completed assignments on a wide variety of properties including farmland, ranch land, future development properties, recreational properties, acreages, equestrian properties and intensive livestock operations. Courtney’s reports have been prepared for expropriation hearings, the Surface Rights Board, the Ecological Gift Program, foreclosure purposes, divorce proceedings and estate and tax settlement. Courtney has developed skills in appraising special and unique properties where limited market data requires extensive research and careful analysis. Courtney has appeared as an expert witness for the Surface Rights Board and the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Glen has a background in agricultural economics and provides specialized consulting services in the areas of rural/agricultural business appraisals, farm agri-business management and farm financial management. Glen has completed innumerable real estate appraisals relating to expropriation and surface rights situations throughout Alberta, as well as mortgage, estate, expropriation, and native land claims. He has provided expert witness testimony qualified in the areas of real estate appraisal and agrology before the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Surface Rights Board, the Alberta Utilities Commission, and the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Bob, a senior partner with Serecon, has over 30 years experience as a professional evaluator and analyst. He is an expert in using both quantitative and qualitative information in assessing the impact of critical factors on the value of business operations. Bob has owned and managed agri-food business enterprises, including a dairy farm and a poultry processing operation. Bob is on the Board of Directors for a number of organizations including Meadowcroft Housing Corporation, Mattheson Seniors Housing Corporation, and Brentwood Homes. Among other designations Mr. Burden is a Certified Valuations Analyst (CVA), a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag), and holds Masters degrees in Business and Agriculture.
